Artist of the Month
Francesco Gaurdi
A Brief History of Francesco Guardi (1712–1793)
Francesco Guardi was an Italian painter of the Venetian School, best known for his vedute (detailed cityscapes) of 18th-century Venice. He was a key figure in the development of Venetian landscape painting, following in the tradition of Canaletto, though his style was more atmospheric and expressive.
Early Life and Training
Born in Venice in 1712, Guardi was part of a family of painters. His father, Domenico Guardi, and his older brother, Gian Antonio Guardi, were both artists. Francesco initially worked in his brother’s studio, painting religious and historical subjects before turning to landscape and cityscape painting in the 1750s.
Artistic Style and Career
Guardi is best known for his loose, painterly technique, which contrasts with Canaletto’s precise architectural accuracy. His cityscapes capture the light, movement, and atmosphere of Venice rather than just its physical details. His later works, often considered pre-Impressionistic, use quick, expressive brushstrokes to depict the shimmering reflections of water and hazy Venetian skies.
Some of his most famous works include:
The Doge’s Palace and the Riva degli Schiavoni
The Lagoon with Boats
Capriccio: A Fantastical Architectural View
Later Years and Legacy
By the late 18th century, Guardi's style had evolved into a more romantic and dramatic vision of Venice, capturing its fading grandeur as the Republic of Venice declined. His work greatly influenced later Venetian painters and is now celebrated for its lively, poetic quality. He died in 1793, largely overshadowed in his time by Canaletto but later recognized as one of the greatest Venetian painters.
